”National Launch of Free Sanitary Pads for Girls in School by President Mahama”

On April 24, 2025, Ghana made history as President John Dramani Mahama officially launched the Free Sanitary Pad Initiative for girls in schools. This bold move is a major step forward for girls’ education and health across the country. The launch event in Accra brought together government officials, educators, and students, all united in support of this important cause.

Why This Initiative Matters

For many girls in Ghana, managing their periods is a huge challenge. Some families cannot afford sanitary pads, forcing girls to stay home during their periods. Research shows that girls can miss up to five days of school each month because they lack proper sanitary products. Over a year, this adds up to nearly 40 days of missed lessons, which can cause girls to fall behind or even drop out of school. President Mahama made it clear: “No girl in Ghana should miss school because of a menstrual period”.

A Promise Kept

This initiative is part of President Mahama’s promise to the people of Ghana. It fulfils his commitment to remove barriers that stop girls from getting a good education. By providing free sanitary pads, the government is not only helping girls stay in school but also easing the financial burden on families who struggle to buy these essential products.

President Mahama reassured parents, “Help is here, and help is here to stay”.

More than Just Pads

The Free Sanitary Pad Initiative is about more than just distributing pads. It is about dignity, confidence, and equal opportunities for girls. The government is also encouraging schools to educate students about menstrual hygiene, breaking the silence and shame that often surrounds this natural process. Teachers and school leaders play a key role in making sure girls feel supported and confident to attend school every day.

Boosting Girls’ Education

With this programme, Ghana is making progress towards gender equality and quality education for all. The initiative is expected to increase school attendance and improve academic performance among girls. It also supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, especially those focused on education and gender equality.

Economic and Social Impact

President Mahama also called on local businesses to help produce sanitary pads in Ghana, which could create jobs and boost the economy. By investing in girls’ education and health, the country is investing in its future.

A Brighter Future for Girls

The national launch of free sanitary pads is a clear message that every girl in Ghana deserves to go to school with dignity and confidence. It is a promise of hope, opportunity, and equality. As more girls stay in school and reach their full potential, the whole nation stands to benefit from their success.

With this initiative, Ghana is taking a big step forward, ensuring that no girl is left behind because of her period.
